Fire Door Closers: your questions answered

A fire door closer is designed to automatically close a fire door after it has been opened. It is a crucial component in fire door sets and fire safety systems. In this blog, we provide an overview of all the key facts around fire door closers and what they mean for your business.

Do Fire Doors Require Self Closers?

Fire door self closers improve fire safety and are installed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building. In the event of a fire, these devices ensure that fire doors are closed promptly, restricting the fire’s progress, and protecting escape routes.

How do Fire Door Closers Work?

Fire door closers can work in one of two ways – through manual activation or automatic activation.

  • Manual Activation is where they are activated by a fire alarm system or smoke detectors. When triggered, the closer releases the door, allowing it to fully close into the door set frame.
  • Automatic activation, is where they are electronically activated by the opening of the door. Spring pressure builds up inside the closer as the door leaf is opened and this pressure is then used to fully close the door.

What are the different types of fire door closers?

There are three main types to choose from:

  • Overhead surface mounted Door Closers – Mounted at the top of the door, these are most common in commercial buildings.
  • Concealed Door Closers – Hidden in the door frame or the door leaf, providing a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
  • Floor Spring Door Closers – Mounted in the floor, these types of closer are most commonly used in single or double doors that open in both directions e.g., corridors.

What are the rules for fire door closers in the UK?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires, amongst other things, that fire door closers must adhere to building regulations and fire safety standards. The Order applies to almost all buildings, places, and structures other than private dwellings.

How do I maintain my fire door closers?

Fire door closers are typically integrated into a building’s overall fire safety system. This coordination ensures that, in the event of a fire, all necessary components work together seamlessly.

Regular inspections and maintenance are essential to ensure the proper functioning and their continued effectiveness. This includes verifying that the door closes completely into the door frame and if a latch is fitted, that it latches securely.

It is advisable that a ‘competent person’ with the right training, experience, qualifications and knowledge carries out the regular maintenance.
